A Court of Silver Flames

The climax unfolds during the Blood Rite, the brutal Illyrian trial that Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie undergo together as a trio. After surviving days of combat and bonding over their shared trauma, Nesta makes a last stand at the Pass of Enalius to let her two chosen sisters reach the summit safely, killing a group of attackers led by Emerie's cousin Bellius. Cassian arrives just as Bellius, under the mind control of Queen Briallyn, is about to kill Nesta; Cassian kills Bellius and begs Nesta to kill him too, since he is also under Briallyn's control. Briallyn threatens to have Cassian killed unless Nesta hands over the Dread Trove, and when the order to kill is given without specifying a target, Cassian tries to sacrifice himself. Enraged and terrified, Nesta unleashes the full force of her stolen Cauldron-born power and uses Briallyn's own Crown to Unmake the queen entirely, destroying her and ending her alliance with Koschei's schemes for that book. In the aftermath, Nesta and Cassian finally admit aloud that they are true mates.

The celebration is cut short when Nesta and Cassian are summoned back to the River House: Feyre's unborn son's wings have torn her womb, and she is dying, with Rhysand and the baby also fatally bound to her fate through their power. With healers unable to help and Rhysand unraveling, Nesta reaches for the only power great enough to intervene. She summons the complete Dread Trove — Crown, Mask, and Harp — and dons all three at once. Time stops, and she hears the voice of the Mother, to whom she pleads not for power but for the chance to keep loving and living alongside the people she cares about. In desperation, she strikes a bargain: she offers to give back everything she stole from the Cauldron all those months ago if it will save Feyre, Rhysand, and their son. As she repeats "I give it back, I give it all back," the Crown, Mask, and Harp fall away from her and the stolen power drains out of her. At the last moment, the Mother intervenes and allows Nesta to keep a small remnant of her power — her silver flame.

Feyre wakes, alive, along with Rhysand and the baby. She tells Nesta she loves her, and Nesta, overcome, says it back and sobs in her sister's arms, finally closing the emotional distance that had defined so much of the book. In the closing scene, Nesta visits her father's grave to speak with him one last time, then leaves to rejoin her sisters, having found — through Cassian, through Gwyn and Emerie, and through the reconciliation with Feyre — the acceptance and healing she had been fighting against for so long.

Nesta Archeron, made High Fae against her will during the war, spends the book spiraling through grief, guilt, and self-destruction before her sister Feyre forces her out of her human-lands apartment and into the House of Wind. There she is placed under the reluctant mentorship of Cassian, the Illyrian general who has long been drawn to her, and begins working in the Night Court's library among the priestesses, where she befriends two of them, Gwyn and, separately, the shopkeeper Emerie in the Illyrian war-camp village. The three women — all survivors of male violence and war trauma — become close, training together in a blend of Illyrian and rediscovered Valkyrie combat techniques that Nesta helps organize.

Alongside this personal arc, a political threat emerges: the human queen Briallyn has allied with the sorcerer Koschei and is hunting the Dread Trove (the Crown, the Mask, and the Harp), Made objects of immense power, in order to locate Cauldron pieces and restore her youth. Because Nesta carries stolen power from the Cauldron itself, she is enlisted to scry for and retrieve the Trove pieces before Briallyn can. She recovers the Mask from the Bog of Oorid (killing an ancient Kelpie and commanding the dead in the process) and the Harp from the Prison (where she and Cassian also kill the imprisoned creature Lanthys). During this time, Nesta and Cassian's relationship moves from antagonism to a physical and then emotional bond; by book's end they have openly declared their love and confirmed to each other that they are true mates.

A major reveal is that Nesta's grief-driven work at a forge accidentally imbued three weapons — a greatsword she names Ataraxia, a longsword, and a dagger — with her own magic, meaning she can Make objects the way the Cauldron once did. The Inner Circle debates in secret whether to tell her this, and their vote (with Amren and Rhysand initially against disclosure) badly damages Nesta's trust in Amren in particular, a rift that is not fully healed by the book's end. Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie undergo the Blood Rite together and each survive it, cementing their bond as chosen sisters; during the Rite, Nesta kills Briallyn by Unmaking her with the stolen Crown, ending that immediate threat, though Briallyn's ally Koschei remains alive and unaddressed.

The book closes with a near-catastrophe: Feyre's pregnancy turns life-threatening when the baby's wings tear her womb, endangering Feyre, Rhysand, and the unborn child. Nesta saves them by donning the full Dread Trove and striking a bargain that returns the Cauldron-power she had carried since being Made — though the Mother allows her to retain a small amount of her silver flame ability. Feyre and Nesta reconcile fully, expressing love for each other for the first time. Going into the next book, open threads include: the fate and whereabouts of the now-dispersed Dread Trove pieces, Koschei's unresolved plans and power, the full extent of Nesta's remaining (reduced) abilities, the strained trust between Nesta and Amren, and the newly confirmed mate bond between Nesta and Cassian as they move forward as a couple within the Night Court.
