After months of a fake-dating arrangement that becomes achingly real, Daphne and Miles finally admit their feelings for each other but stumble before they can get there cleanly. When Peter tries to win Daphne back and taunts her that Miles will inevitably return to Petra, Miles does in fact drive out to help Petra with something, panicking in the way he'd already warned Daphne he tends to do when things get complicated. When Daphne confronts him about it, he confesses he's in love with her, but she rejects him, tells him she's leaving Michigan, and reveals she has a job interview lined up in Maryland, near her mother.

Daphne's mother helps her regain her footing emotionally, and Daphne repairs her fractured friendship with her coworker Ashleigh by secretly painting Ashleigh's bedroom as a make-good gesture. Meanwhile, Miles's sister Julia tells Daphne that her encouragement helped her and Miles finally talk honestly about their difficult childhood. Just before the library's big Read-a-Thon fundraiser, Daphne learns from her own father that Miles had driven hours to personally urge him to show up and support Daphne — proof of how much Miles actually cares. This is the moment Daphne realizes the depth and sincerity of Miles's feelings for her.

The Read-a-Thon itself goes off successfully, capping off Daphne's professional storyline on a high note. Afterward, Miles tells Daphne he loves her and asks her to stay in Michigan with him. Daphne confesses she loves him too, but she sets a boundary: she wants to get her own place for a while first, so she doesn't repeat the mistake of merging her whole life into someone else's the way she did with Peter.

The book closes with an epilogue set one year later. Daphne and Miles, now together, host a housewarming party with their friends and family in Waning Bay. At the party, Daphne tells the assembled guests the "funny story" of how she and Miles actually got together — the fake relationship that became real — bringing the narrative full circle from the opening premise of Daphne losing her old "story" with Peter to gaining a new, true one with Miles.
