The novel resolves the custody and relationship tensions that drive its plot. After Ryle discovers evidence that Lily spent the night with Atlas, he assaults her in a jealous rage. Lily flees with their daughter Emerson, first to her mother's house and then to Atlas's home, where she and Atlas finally make their relationship official. After learning that their mother Sutton is abusing Josh, Atlas takes the boy in rather than returning him to her or to his father. Atlas ultimately secures full parental rights over Josh, while still allowing Sutton weekly supervised family dinners at his restaurant, giving Josh a stable, safe home with Atlas.

The book closes with a time jump showing the couple's happy ending: six months after getting together, Atlas asks Lily to move in with him, and she says yes. A year and a half after that, the epilogue shows Atlas nervously preparing to marry Lily, rehearsing his wedding vows with his friend Theo—vows that include a callback to Finding Nemo, the film that has symbolized Atlas and Lily's enduring connection since childhood. The story ends on this note of stability and hard-won happiness for Lily, Atlas, Emerson, and Josh.
