The Road

As the father and son near the end of their journey south, they reach the coast, but the sea offers no salvation—just more gray water and cold. They find a wrecked boat offshore, and the father swims out to strip it of supplies, including a flare gun. Not long after, while the boy sleeps, a thief steals their cart and everything they own. They catch up to him, and the father forces the man to strip naked at gunpoint, taking back their belongings and his clothes and shoes as well. The boy, upset at this cruelty, convinces his father to return the man's clothes and shoes to the road, though the thief has already vanished.

Continuing on, they pass through an inland town where a man hiding in a window shoots the father in the leg with an arrow. The father kills the man with the flare gun in retaliation. The wound, combined with his worsening cough and exhaustion, marks the beginning of his final decline. They move further along the beach, but the father grows steadily weaker over the following days, until he recognizes that he is dying.

In his last hours, the father tells the boy that he must go on living without him, that he will still be able to talk to his father even after he's gone, and that the boy must keep "carrying the fire." He dies shortly afterward. The boy remains beside his father's body for three days, unwilling to leave him, in a state of grief and paralysis.

Eventually a stranger carrying a shotgun finds the boy. The man reveals he has been trailing them for some time and that he has a wife, a son, and a daughter with him. He tells the boy he is one of the "good guys." After some hesitation and questioning, the boy chooses to trust him and go with the family. The novel ends ambiguously but with a note of tentative hope: the boy is taken in, still carrying forward the fragile decency and love his father instilled in him, into an uncertain future.
