Red Rising Saga

Darrow au Andromedus enters Golden Son as a Red who has successfully infiltrated Gold society under a fabricated identity, his true origins known only to a small circle: his uncle Narol, the Sons of Ares rebels (led by Dancer), and the man who trained him. His motivation remains the memory of his wife Eo, publicly hanged by ArchGovernor Nero Augustus for singing a protest song after the two were caught in a restricted forest — Darrow faked his own death afterward to be recruited into the rebellion.

After being physically transformed into a Gold through an illegal "carving" and trained in Gold customs and combat, Darrow was placed in House Mars at the Institute, the elite proving ground where Society's young Golds compete for status. There he formed a close friendship with Cassius, not realizing he would later be forced to kill Cassius's brother Julian during the Institute's opening "Passage." He also discovered and was responsible for the death of Titus, another secretly-carved Red mole within House Mars, and earned the nickname "Reaper" for wielding a scythe in combat.

Over the course of the Institute's war games, Darrow built a powerful army by freeing enslaved fellow students, conquered rival Houses, and clashed repeatedly with the Jackal (Adrius au Augustus), the ruthless, self-mutilated son of Nero Augustus and leader of House Pluto. Cassius eventually learned that Darrow killed his brother Julian and nearly killed Darrow in a duel; Darrow survived thanks to Mustang (Virginia au Augustus), who rescued and hid him, and with whom he developed a romantic relationship. Cassius has since abdicated his House but sworn an open blood feud against Darrow — an unresolved threat heading into the next book.

A major reveal late in the book is that Mustang is actually the Jackal's twin sister; despite Darrow's fears of betrayal, she proved loyal and helped him capture her own brother. With House Mars's total victory, Darrow won the Institute outright. Fitchner, House Mars's Proctor and a secret ally, revealed that Nero Augustus had been bribing Proctors to ensure the Jackal's success — corruption Darrow now has leverage over. The book ends with Darrow agreeing to hide this corruption and become Nero Augustus's Lancer (personal aide), publicly aligning himself with House Augustus despite privately hating Nero as Eo's killer. Going into the next book, Darrow is deeply embedded among the Golds, tied to Nero and the Jackal's family, allied with Mustang, at odds with Cassius, and still secretly working toward the Sons of Ares' goal of dismantling the Society from within — all while concealing his true Red identity.

Morning Star picks up roughly a year after the Lion's Rain, with Darrow's revolution in full, brutal swing. Harmony's earlier betrayal exposed Darrow to Adrius au Augustus (the Jackal), leading to the murder of Io's ArchGovernor Revus au Raa and sparking rebellion among the Rim Golds. Roque au Fabii commands the Society's Sword Armada against Virginia's fleet, while Howler-turned-traitor Thistle has defected to the Jackal, and Sevro has stepped up as the public face of the Rising, calling himself Ares.

Darrow is captured and tortured by Adrius, forced to give up his home colony of Lykos, while a body double is publicly executed in his place; Sevro counters by revealing Darrow's true Red origins, triggering system-wide lowColor uprisings. Darrow is rescued by defecting Praetorians Holiday and Trigg, along with a captive Victra au Barca, but Trigg is killed by Aja au Grimmus before Sevro and Ragnar Volarus arrive to save the group. Darrow rejoins the Howlers, growing increasingly uneasy with Sevro's guerrilla methods.

A botched attempt to kidnap the financier Quicksilver on Phobos reveals that Quicksilver co-founded the Sons of Ares and resents Gold rule. Darrow and Sevro reconcile, with Sevro ceding overall command to Darrow. Ragnar joins Darrow's inner circle, but during a mission to recruit Obsidians at Mars's southern pole, Aja fatally wounds him; Darrow euthanizes him after he reunites briefly with his sister Sefi. It's revealed Ragnar's mother, Alia Snowsparrow, had been complicit in the Society's manipulation of the Obsidians; Sefi executes her and brings the Obsidians into the Rising.

Darrow forges an alliance with the Rim Golds under Romulus au Raa by bluffing about possession of Octavia's stolen nuclear arsenal, turning Romulus against Roque. In the ensuing battle, Darrow storms Roque's flagship Colossus; Roque, betrayed by his own Pink valet, takes his own life rather than be captured. Using the captured ship, Darrow and Victra destroy the Ganymede shipyards, crippling the Rim's war capacity and shattering the Sword Armada. Antonia au Severus-Julii is captured, and after murdering Thistle to protect Adrius's secrets, is later executed by Aja on Octavia's orders for desertion.

Tensions boil over when Adrius publicly executes an ally, prompting an Obsidian riot against Gold prisoners in the Rising's fleet; Sevro defuses it by staging a mock hanging with Cassius au Bellona, after which Sevro forgives Cassius. Sevro and Victra marry amid the chaos. Darrow learns from Adrius that he deliberately killed Quinn, and Darrow in turn tells Cassius the truth that Adrius, with Octavia's knowledge, massacred the Bellona family — not Darrow or the Rising.

The war culminates in an assault on Luna. Cassius appears to betray the Rising, seemingly killing Sevro (who has actually faked death) and capturing Darrow and Virginia, delivering them to Octavia. But Cassius's loyalty ultimately lies with Darrow: he frees him and Virginia during Darrow's public execution broadcast. Darrow kills Octavia, Sevro is revived, and together with Cassius and Virginia they kill Aja. Before dying, Octavia warns them of Adrius, who has planted stolen nuclear weapons on Luna and has his ally Lilath detonate several, killing millions in a desperate bid for power. Darrow tears out Adrius's tongue to stop him, and Lysander au Lune convinces the Ash Lord to help destroy Lilath's ship, ending the nuclear crisis.

By the book's end, Virginia au Augustus is installed as the new Sovereign, recognized by Lysander, Darrow, Sevro, Cassius, and the Senate. The Rising controls Luna, Mars, and Earth, while the Ash Lord's remaining forces retreat to Mercury and Venus. Sefi's Obsidians return to Mars, Cassius adopts the orphaned Lysander, and Adrius is publicly executed for his crimes. Virginia dissolves the Senate and begins prosecuting thousands for crimes against humanity, starting the work of rebuilding society. In a private final moment, Virginia reveals to Darrow that she secretly bore their son, Pax, during the war. At the book's close, the immediate war against Octavia's regime is won, but the Ash Lord's forces remain at large on Mercury and Venus, and the enormous task of reforming a shattered, still-divided solar system — including reconciling Gold, Obsidian, and lowColor factions — lies ahead for Darrow and Virginia.
